As we walk back to the apartment, there’s buzzing in my veins. I don’t know what’s come over me, but I have anticipation that’s building in me like a geyser. An urge to touch and kiss Daevonte more intimately. More intimately than I’ve wanted to with anybody in a really long time.
I’m scared too. Scared where that might lead and if I can even go there with him. But my dick has been telling me otherwise. I even yanked on it last night, following through on my fantasy about this guy standing next to me, smelling good and looking even better.
Once back inside, Dae slips out of his sneakers at the door and places them neatly alongside mine, like he usually does, almost hyperaware of how uptight I am about cleanliness. When he lets out a little chuckle, my eyebrow arches. “What?”
“I realize the only area in your house that looks somewhat messy is the room where you do your work. Am I right? Is it the only place you let yourself go?”
How the hell does he do that? See me for who I am?
“Guess so. When I lived with my parents, I sketched a lot because no way would my mother allow any paint in the house. But every summer, I’d sign up for these art programs, and it wasn’t until I got to college that I truly discovered how much I loved the medium.” He follows me into the dining room that doubles as my art studio. I consider asking him to smoke a joint, but while weed tends to get my creative juices flowing, it might be the opposite for him. “Needless to say, my father was pissed. He wanted me to study political science, even though I never had any aspirations. My sister convinced my parents I needed to follow my own path.”
Daevonte pads over to one of my finished canvases along the floor and grasps for his chin as he examines it. “Thank God she did because your work is amazing.”
As I dip my head and mumble a thank you, he walks along the perimeter of the room to check out some of my previous works. I shift uncomfortably on my feet as if he’s scrutinizing me as well as my art. I reach for a blank canvas and place it on the easel for our lesson as he squats down near the pieces I’ve recently been struggling with. “Is this the newest one for the gallery?”
“Yeah.” I swallow thickly, wondering what he’ll think. Nobody else has even seen it yet.
“It’s different from your other paintings,” he remarks as his hand makes a sweeping motion around the room. I’m impressed by how astute his eye is, after only viewing my art on a couple of occasions, and only several pieces at that. My work on the mural doesn’t exactly count, though he was able to discern pretty quickly that it wasn’t my style. “It’s incredible.”
“Thanks,” I breathe out in relief and before I can fathom
